I went to San Diego for a short meeting with my cousin in tow. As he was visiting from Asia, I asked him what he wanted to eat. He said he wanted to eat at an American diner. Hmmm, that one made me think of a greasy dive. As much as I wanted to accommodate my cousin’s request, I also tried to make sure that the pescatarian (my cousin) was satisfied sans the greasy spoon atmosphere. I then took to Yelp and discovered Burger Lounge.
The atmosphere was very chill and relaxed. It’s a fast food burger joint that offers anything but the typical fast food fare. Yes, it serves burgers and fries. I mean after all, it’s called Burger Lounge. However, there’s also something for customers looking for something different, maybe a little healthy even.
I ordered the organic quinoa veggie burger. It has to be one of the best tasting veggie burgers I’ve ever had. Oh my! It was packed with so much flavor. It’s made with organic quinoa, brown rice, zucchini, garbanzo, carrot, corn, and chipotle. All the ingredients meshed just perfectly. It also didn’t have the cardboard texture that has so many people running away from veggie burgers. It was crispy, soft yet firm, and definitely held it’s shape. For anyone interested in trying a veggie burger, this one is a must.
My cousin ordered the seared albacore “burger.” He liked it. So did I. The fish was prepared well, not overdone at all. It was a little bland for me though. I think it needed just a dash of salt. The lemon-basil aoli, however, more than made up for it.
The fries were good. I really like fries, but try to stay away from them whenever possible. I just keep thinking about the grease and the calories. The fries at Burger Lounge were flavorful, seasoned just right, and not too greasy. I didn’t feel too guilty about devouring it one bit.
If ever I am in San Diego, I will make sure to stop by again. On my to try list is the grass fed burger, lamb burger, organic buckwheat salad, and onion rings. Upon visiting the website, I found out that a location is opening in Orange County. I can’t wait. Although there are several locations in the Los Angeles area, all of them are still over an hour away from me…and that’s without traffic.
The one gripe I have with the Hillcrest location is parking. I suppose I’m used to free parking here in Orange County, and a lot of it. We had to park a few blocks away from Burger Lounge. In the end, it was all good. The walk was good for us anyway.
Burger Lounge is located at 528 5th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101.
