My boys love to build. We have several different kinds of building blocks in their toy rotation. There’s something about construction sets that cultivate creativity and spark the imagination. They never tire of them.
We received two YOXO® (pronounced yock-so) construction kits for review, the Orig and Flye. Before I opened the box, I wasn’t sure about the durability of these kits since the pieces looked like colored cardboard. I liked that they are made from post-consumer recycled wood fiber. However, I wasn’t sure how long they would last in the hands of my two boys. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box.
YOXO® construction kits
- Orig – YOXObot
- Flye – dragonfly
- Doon – dune buggy
- YOXO® To Go – starter kit
Each kit comes with an instructions manual, interchangeable chipboard connectors in Y, O, and X shapes, punch out component, and eye stickers.
These eco-friendly kits are made with chipboard which are incredibly strong and sturdy.
Although the toys are recommended for older kids (ages five and up), that did not stop Little B from enjoying them nevertheless. He stacked them by color and shape, and made his own creations. The step-by-step instructions are simple enough to follow. However, I had a hard time trying to create the bonus figures from the guide that came in the kit. There were no instructions, just a piece of paper that lays what parts you need and the number of units for each additional figure.
There are many features that I really like about these kits aside from the sturdiness. The colors are bright and vivid. The shapes are fun. You can expand the kit by adding empty toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, and cardboard boxes laying around the house. The connectors are also easy to put together.
YOXO® favorite features
- Made from FSC-certified post-consumer recycled wood fiber
- Durable and well made
The price point of the kits ranges from $14.99 (YOXO® To Go) to $24.99 (Flye). These kits are available at Target, Barnes and Nobles, and select retailers. The one thing I would like to see is a closure for the box to ensure that the box doesn’t open inadvertently. For now, the adhesive on the tape on the outside of the box helps to keep the box close so that the pieces don’t fall out during storage.
